Tips on Writing a Good Dissertation
Dissertation is far the most important undertaking in the life of an aspiring researcher. It is quite different from any other research paper that you have written over your coursework. The length of a dissertation is significantly larger, the requirements are more demanding but the main difference is that you can't do with a profound study of literature. It has to be your own independent research with non-standard methods involved. However, there is no way back if you want to prove that you are worth of the doctoral degree. Look through our tips on writing a good dissertation that have evolved from our years of experience in academic writing:
Break your objectives into smaller tasks. Your dissertation surely has some major goal but you need to set small and achievable objectives, preferably with a deadline for each of them. It will not only help you to organize yourself but will also provide satisfaction after you complete every small task.
Write regularly. Make yourself write at least a paragraph every day. Create some incentives to motivate yourself. Never exceed the limit of seven hours of writing every day. The optimal time for uninterrupted writing is 45 minutes. After this time, relax and change your activity to return with a fresh view of the problem.
Write without stopping to revise. When your inspiration has finally come, the most important thing is not to scare it off with revisions and meditations. Just write everything that comes to your mind. Whatever is irrelevant, can be simply deleted afterwards.
Define which time of day or night is the most suitable for you to write. However, don't limit yourself to these time slots only.
Write in uncluttered space and with uncluttered mind. Make sure that neither the environment nor your thoughts distract you from your current tasks. Otherwise it is more reasonable to postpone the writing a little.
Start with whatever is the easiest for you. Despite that your dissertation needs to have a clear structure, it's not necessary to start with the introduction just because it is the first in the list. You may start with the results or the discussion if it more comfortable for you to work this way.
Make rough drafts. You may write in layers: the first layer is going t be the skeleton of your paper or section, then you expand on your ideas, then you add more evidence and details.
Seek feedback. We don't only mean that you need to consult your advisor: it is very helpful to talk through your ideas with your friends or relatives. Even though they may be not really competent in your topic they still can objectively evaluate the consistence of your ideas.
Don't get upset when you have to rewrite something. That is the natural process: it demonstrates your growth as a scientist and your ability to reevaluate what you do.
Reward yourself for good work. When you have written a section or a part successfully, you deserve to have some rest. It is absolutely necessary to release stress if you want your writing to be efficient.
